You have graduated and looking for college scholarships. It is a great feeling, finishing high school, and you are ready for the college life. University life can really be a lot of freedom for students to handle. Getting away from home can be a great feeling. But one item to keep in mind is that with freedom comes responsibility.

The financial responsibilities that come with the freedom are likely the most important. You need to keep a check on your expenses and save as much money as you can. A scholarship is a good way to save money. You can pay for your expenses without getting a student loan. Getting a scholarship may be a lengthy process but the money you will be saving is worth it.

The first thing to do when looking into scholarships is to sit down with pen and paper and make a list of as many as you are aware of. Doing this will allow you to have all the scholarships you may qualify for listed right in front of you, and then you can start sorting through them. You want to try and make your list as long as possible. If you don?t know about many scholarship programs you can ask your career counselor or go online. There are thousands of scholarships available in the world, even special scholarships for women. By doing a simple search online you will be surprised to find many scholarship programs looking for all kinds of different criteria.

There are even websites that will give you a free list of scholarships available to college students. Do a lot of searching so you will get a very long list. When making the list of scholarship programs you should take note of the various criteria for each sholarship. Once you have all the different scholarship programs you can then go through them and weed out the ones that do not fit.

You should make it a point to apply to as many scholarships as you are able, the wider you cast your net, the better. At the most what will happen is you will be turned down for the scholarship. Just remember if there are no takers you may well end up getting it by default. There are so many scholarships which go waste only because there were just no applicants; so for that off chance, put in your application. Even after you have applied keep your list of Scholarships. You will know for which ones you got and which ones you did not.

Additionally, even if you plan on going to a distance learning college course of study, there are still scholarships that you can apply for.

From your list of scholarships also apply to the scholarships which have lesser rewards. You will have better chances at obtaining one of these because not many students apply for it. If you can get ten these little scholarships it might do more for you than one of the larger ones. The secret is to apply to as many as possible, cast a wide net, do lots of research and send those applications out.
