The first secret to become a proficient strummer is to let your hand relax. You can do this by stretching or flexing your fingers. You are attempting to get the tension out of your fingers. This is very important because a tense strumming hand will translate to poor playing.

When your hand feels relaxed it’s time to start strumming. You should begin by playing simple down strums only and counting regular beats. Start of by only playing one chord. Once have mastered strumming with one chord you can start changing between chords.

Once down strums are in the bag you will want to add up strums. The next thing you will want to do is add up strums to your strumming patterns.
