NZ Designers Engineer Stunning Design Products
Designs connoiseurs, and especially those of NZ Designers, here sure had plenty to keep busy with last year. In addition to the usual banner events like the NZ Designers Awards and ArchiFest, there was a run of other contented events ranging from drop-ins from idealists like Dave Brown and Phil Warkworth to unusual projects like a design film holiday at the Cinema.
And it seems like this year’s NZ Designers social design calendar is headed the same way.
Hot on the heels of the World Furniture Fair Singapore last month, we were given word that Australia’s hip trade show for the design community, Sat. In Design, will be holding its first Asian show in Singapore on May 21.
“We have been having a look at coming to Singapore for some time – the 1st time was in 2004 to 2005 – but the Asian monetary disaster hit. We considered again in 2008, except that the world economy was very rocky then,” said Raj Nandan, chairperson and Boss of Indesign Media Group, the corporation responsible for the event in Australia.
Sat. In Design commenced in Sydney in 2003 and showcases furniture, interior fixtures, fittings and finishes, as well as lighting brands and their latest products to industry executives and enthusiasts. Since that time, it’s grown tremendously. The event now swaps annually between Sydney and Melbourne, attracting a median of seven thousand visitors.
To Nandan, Singapore is the natural next stop to grow the event.
“Singaporeans are acquainted with Australia. There’s just great synergy between the 2 nations. We’ve noticed the development here and there is now a great design scene going on – folk are investing, making and making Singapore into a place where design can flourish.
“You have an audience who’s interested and engaged ; there are plenty of leading brands and design firms with a presence here. And Singapore, if you think about it, is a real design town. It’s well-planned, it’s efficient – it shows someone glaringly thought about how the town should be,” Nandan enthused.
The participation of local companies is the key for Singapore’s first Saturday In Design. Nandan calculated that thirty to sixty per cent of exhibitors will be Singapore firms. Local agencies like DesignSingapore, Red Dot and the Singapore Institute of Architects have also lent support to the NZ designers.
