I often hear interpretation and translation professionals telling each other that they could use and additional 5 to 6 hours each day. An extra seven hours in the day might allow you to bring home a larger paycheck because you will be able to complete more jobs, for more customers and maybe even take on some larger and higher paying projects. Our professional lives leave a trail of unfinished tasks such as unanswered letters, unvisited friends, unwritten articles, unanswered calls, unread e-mail messages and the lack of time needed to relax and heal. As a translation worker for many years, I can assure you that adding six hours to the day would not allow us to accomplish anything more. I’m willing to bet the ranch that translators like you and I would be even more frustrated then we are now. A Medical Translator worker’s work is never finished, and neither is that of any manager, student, teacher or anyone else we know.

We often hear the analogy of the iceberg and 90-percent of the problem being below the water. The same is true in our lives. The problem that we have is not a shortage of time, instead it is a need to set better priorities. Hard work and working long hours to complete big projects does not help us. We know what it means to go full speed for long hours, and the resulting weariness is matched by a sense of achievement. Not hard work, but doubt and misgiving produce anxiety that degrades our health and energy. Way back when, a worker at a Miami Translation Services company told me that I needed to focus on priorities because I would too often allow things that were serious to drown out those things which are essential. He did not realize how hard his point hit home. This one statement that I have kept precious all of these years is one of the most important lessons that I have received in setting priorities.

Our space consistent of an atmosphere in which we live in a life between the critical and the essential. Usually, it is just in our heads that some vital even must happen as a set time or else. However, this only creates a constant bombardment of stress inducing demands and then more and more demands as internal pressure mounts to new highs. But just like the house that Jack built, there is no fortress strong enough to keep out every day anxieties that plague our lives and add to our stress levels. We can no longer find a place to relax as the anxieties of everyday life surround us and are here to drain our energy. While we think about that wonderful vacation, the moment quickly comes to an abrupt stop as we realize that we must finish our time sensitive interpretation project. Now it becomes clear to us that we are merely gears in the assembly line.

As an Atlanta Translation worker, I believe that we must all sit back and critically evaluate how we spend our time and think about what is truly important in our lives. The only person who has power over you is God. You can’t escape the reality that anxieties will always exist in life. However, everyone has some control-and probably more than they realize.

Your education in translations and food must continue to improve and that’s why we have written another fun filled exercise for you.Although I coordinated this project, much of the groundwork was completed by Medical, Certificate and Japanese Translation workers who have worked as professional interpreters for many years. It is with my sincere thanks that I recognize these individuals for the three sections of this paper that they have provided.

Feeding the HungaryThis paragraph was provided by a highly skilled College Transcript Translation professional. Because major charities and religious organizations often need the services of a certified translation worker, we thought you might enjoy an exercise written by one. Often their work involves legal matters where translated documents must be certified and notarized.

To keep our theme consistent across all articles in our series, our translation worker has written a sections on world hunger and organizations that are helping to cure the problem. Here are some not for profit organizations that seek to stomp out the hunger problem. The project is to divide up a check in the amount of $125,000 to approximately seven different food relief programs that are listed below. While you are the one who is responsible for splitting up the money, you must be able to justify your decision. To jump start your effort, remove any worry and let you enjoy the process, we have developed a question guide to help you organize your thoughts. Do the organizations have a sound reputation? What sorts of activities do they provide? How much of each dollar will go to the people they claim to help?

Feed the Children

Just Because

Bread for the World

America’s Second Harvest

Meds & Food for Kids

Heifer International

The Hunger Site

Project Peanut Butter

Save the Children

Friends of the World Food Program

Among all jobs in the translation trade, Medical Translation Services is by far the most challenging. Sloppy handwriting in the medical translation is an international problem that is further complicated with poor grammar, incomplete sentences and bad spelling. It’s an interesting discovery that many incomplete sentences often begin with or contain the single word because. You can visualize the problem more easily with a few illustrations.

Our medical translation workers make an excellent point. In all of my days on earth, I can’t think of anyone who would have a problem using the term because. Fortunately, because I like using the word because this doesn’t mean that you should stop using it. Believe me, you do not. But keep in mind that the proper use of the word because is important ,so don’t misuse it. Try to keep these simple ideas in mind. Because Jose likes asperin. James was sore because of what? In each of these phrases, important details are ignored. Unfortunately, when put all together the phrase still lacks completeness. You could easily complete the thought by adding some words at the beginning or end of the sentence. For example: Because she is an addict, Sonja requested some colorful pills. Or: Because she has had success with the prescription in the past, Sonja prescribed the 20 mg version.

Synonyms
One of the toughest parts about becoming an expert Japanese to English Translation worker is building a strong vocabulary and then using it correctly. Synonyms are words that have the same or nearly the same meaning. The word synonym refers to one of two or more words or expressions of the same language that have the same or nearly the same meaning in some or all senses.

Practically everyone who has ever worked as a professional translator knows that English and German share many similarities when it comes to vocabulary. German to English Translation students usually find this to be a blessing and a curse.

All learners of the German language should be taught about this issue. However, unfortunately, many early learners of German or English don’t understand that things are not always what they may seem. Also known as “false friends,” false cognates are words that look like or sound like a word in another language, but actually have nothing in common with it. The translation profession regularly deals with the challenge of avoiding falling prey to false cognates. Once again, false cognates are deceiving because they look like a common word, but in actuality they have nothing to do with it. Incorrectly using false cognates can cause embarrassment at best and lawsuits in the worst case scenario.

False cognates are prevalent in German and English because the two languages are both Germanic languages. There are countless words that look and sound alike in German and English. Brother / Bruder, auto / Auto, house / Haus, glass / Glas, etc. are just a few examples of the numerous true cognates that exist between the two languages. Many such true cognates exist between the German and English languages, and these should be differentiated from the many false cognates between the two languages.

Regardless of whether you are translating into English from German or into German from English, your translation process will go much more quickly if the text contains true cognates. However, false cognates can present stumbling blocks regardless of whether you are translating from German to English or from English to German. Regardless of what you call them: “falsche Freunde,” “false friends,” or false cognatesby any name can present problems if translation service providers are not careful.

After (After) all is said and done, the act (Akt) of translation can be quite objective (Objektiv). In this sentence, the German words in parentheses actually mean something quite different from what you might expect. As an illustration, the words in parentheses: “After”, “Akt” and “Objektiv” have very different meanings from their English equivalents. In actuality they mean “rectum,” “nude” and “camera lens” in English. Medical Translation Services have similar false friends, with words like “Visite” actually meaning hospital rounds. In addition, professional medical translators understand that false cognates like “Spring” actually mean to jump, and not the season.

Similar difficulties are found in legal translations, which false cognates popping up frequently. These often include words like “Rathaus,” which means “City Hall,” and not a home for a rodent. Poor German Legal Translation Services are also full of words like “Akt” (see above for meaning) and “absolvieren,” which means to successfully finish a course.

This list of false friends is certainly not exhaustive of the vast number of words that stump amateur translators. A “Drogerei” is like a drugstore, but lacks the drugs. What it does sell are personal hygiene items such as shampoo, hairspray, deodorant, toothpaste and the like. Germans know they must go to the Apotheke to get their prescription medications. In addition, you will need a “Rezept” (prescription) if you go to the pharmacy, but don’t ask the cashier for a “Rezept”, because she will think you are asking for a prescription or a recipe. In the end, this article seeks to simply remind professional translators that there are many pitfalls of translation, and that when translating from German to English or vice versa, one must be highly cognizant of the presence of false cognates. Mistakenly using false cognates always results in gross errors that reflect poorly on the German translator, the German translation and on the organization or person who uses the translation for official purposes.

In our second article on food and translation, we have developed more extremely interesting content to keep you excited. For this project several medical translators, legal certificate translators and Japanese translation workers were assigned to this project to assist me in developing exercises. I owe my gratitude to each of these people who have helped in getting this article to the point where it can be published.

Hunger and StarvationThis paragraph was provided by a highly skilled Birth Certificate Translation professional. Because major charities and religious organizations often need the services of a certified translation worker, we thought you might enjoy an exercise written by one. Since you are an international student, you are likely somewhat familiar with the obligations of a certified translation worker.

Since this series of articles deals with food, the certificate translation worker has decided to provide an assignment that involves hunger as a world problem. For the purpose of this project, we have listed the names of several non-profit associations. As your assignment, imagine that you are in charge of an organization that has decided to donate $25,000 each to two different groups. While you are the one who is responsible for splitting up the money, you must be able to justify your decision. To get you started, our certificate translation worker has prepared some questions that you might use to help evaluate the organizations: Who do they help? What kinds of help do they provide? How will they most likely use the donation?

Friends of the World Food Program

Meds & Food for Kids

The Hunger Site

Just Because

America’s Second Harvest

Project Peanut Butter

Feed the Children

Heifer International

Bread for the World

Save the Children

Our Medical Translation workers have a difficult job. We all know that the handwriting of doctors can be illegible and sometimes filled with ambiguity due to incomplete sentences. One word that often leads to incomplete sentences is the word “because”. You can visualize the problem more easily with a few illustrations.

This point is well taken without a grain of salt from anyone in the language studies field. An anyone who is familiar with English as a language will tell you, the word ‘Because’ is an acceptable word to use. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you should avoid the use of the word because. Certainly not! It just means that you need to use it correctly. Here’s a sentence fragment: Because Tony requested pills. Jose broke his leg because of how? In each of these phrases, important details are ignored. Unfortunately, when put all together the phrase still lacks completeness. You could easily complete the thought by adding some words at the beginning or end of the sentence. For example: Sonja requested a prescription because she likes medicine. Conversly: Because Sandra abuses medications, she was the first to ask for a powerful pain killer.

The Same Thing
Developing a catalog of words to use in any given situation is particularly important for any beginning Japanese English Translation worker. Building a strong vocabulary means knowing the right synonyms to use in a variety of conditions. Synonyms can make or break an occasion, make you seem intelligent or lower your credibility among the people who you are trying hard to impress.

Each individual your organization communicates with has their own style and level of communication. To illustrate this example, we can image that a foreign speaking vacationer may have difficulty talking, whereas a second generation US resident will be easy to understand. In addition, some people may not have the skills or ability to speak and will rely on writing notes or letters. In these cases, people may try to communicate using a crude form sign language. Others will be good at listening and others may not.Are you good at reading body language? The reason for asking is that some people may prefer to use body language and we must be able to recognize to this and respond appropriately.

According to a Korean Translation agency, explaining common communication problems is done by example. Therefore, It sometimes helps people to think of familiar people that have trouble communicating. The idea here is to get people to notice that others have their own forms of communication. Clients, witnesses or patients who are challenged with deafness, blindness or have had significant injuries may have had to invent their own way of speaking. The important point here is business communication must be developed to facilitate clear communication. In order to help you provide some quick examples, we have prepared a guide for you.
_ How should you communicate with the individual?
_ Does the he or she communicate in a special way with others?
_ How should you communicate with the person?
_ Would it be worthwhile to communicate through pictures?

Can you understand the importance of asking these questions? When Japanese Legal Translation is the subject, the purpose becomes clear. When this happens, you can expect bad consequences that include faulty data, aggravation, and other inefficiencies that could be preventable.

In the arena of Medical Translation, it is important for the same reasons and you also need to consider how communication works within the medical team, with patients, with families, and with outside agencies. When the verbal exchange, reception and transmission between two parties takes place and errors occur you can count on more serious problems resulting. In addition, as a German Translation worker, you must be aware that everyone is guaranteed the right to make their own decisions.

WIth this new information that has been presented, lets imagine that we must serve a non-English speaking customer.. Since you don’t have a full time German Translation worker to assist you, there is an easy way to begin the process. Once you decided how communication will take place between you and the patient and your co-workers, you can then move forward. The next step is getting past the formalities of indentifying how the person would like to be addressed. One should never overlook the importance of using the service recipients name. This informs the person you are speaking to him, gets his attention, and shows respect. Please be aware that in some cultures, it is disrespectful to call someone by his first name if you do not know that person well.

Most professional European and American translators know that German and English are closely related and have many words in common. This can be both a benefit and a curse for students of German Translation.

English and German language learners need to be apprised of this situation. But often times, beginners make assumptions, and things are actually not at all what they seem. “False friends” are false cognates that actually have nothing in common with what one would expect.

When it comes to translating from German to English or vice versa, there are numerous false friends because the languages are in the same family. There are countless words that look and sound alike in German and English. True cognates include words like: shoe / Schuh, jacket / Jacke, elbow / Elbogen, bed / Bett, garden / Garten, and countless other words that have similar meanings. There are literally hundreds of words like these that are truly similar in meaning and appearance in the English and German languages, but be careful.

It makes no difference which direction you are translating – English to German or German to English – the process of completing a translation is much easier and faster if the source document contains true cognates. However, translations can go bad when translators do not take care to learn all they can about potential issues with false cognates. Regardless of what you call them: “falsche Freunde,” “false friends,” or false cognatesby any name can present problems if translation service providers are not careful.

After (After) the objective (Objektiv) act (Akt) of translation, the target document must be reviewed. In reference to the German words in parentheses, this statement is a good example of how false friends can completely change the meaning of a sentence. In German, the word “After” is defined as “rectum, the German word “Akt” is defined as “nude” painting, and the German word “Objektiv” is defined as “camera lens”. Many such false cognates also exist in medical translations. These include words like “Weh” which really means pain. Experienced medical translators look out for false friends like these in order to avoid making silly mistakes.

Similar difficulties are found in legal translations, which false cognates popping up frequently. These often include words like “Rathaus,” which means “City Hall,” and not a home for a rodent. Poor German Legal Translation are also full of words like “Akt” (see above for meaning) and “absolvieren,” which means to successfully finish a course.

But these are only a few of the numerous false cognates between the German and English languages. For example, the word “drogerei” refers to what Anglophones know as a drugstore, but it does not carry medications. What it does sell are personal hygiene items such as shampoo, hairspray, deodorant, toothpaste and the like. The “Apotheke” is where you will need to shop if you need medicine. If you need a prescription filled, it is called a “Rezept,” but this is different from a receipt, which is a completely different word in German. What all this comes down to is the fact that professional German translators must be aware of the pitfalls and challenges of providing a highly accurate translation that conveys the true meaning of a text without compromising readability. Relying on assumed meanings of false cognates can mean the end of a translation career and can also do serious harm to the person or organization hiring the translator. It can also very often prove to be a costly mistake.

In order to give readers a clear understanding about the difficulties associated with language translation, we have prepared this article. This articles will also provide useful information to college students seeking careers in the translation field. Because a translator realizes that translation is subject to error, he talks about translation from inside the process, knowing how it’s done, possessing a practical real-world sense of the problems involved, some solutions to those problems, and the limitations on those solutions (the translator knows, for example, that no translation will ever be a perfectly reliable guide to Because people from academia saw the weakness with which translations were being performed, a need for improved translations was recognized. Eventually, complete degrees began to be offered in universities that had the objective to teaching the skills necessary to deliver quality translations that are equivalent to source documents.

Within the next decade, more universities began offering programs in German Translation studies that included coursework in historical translation theory from Roman times and moving forward into modern times. New coursework was later amended to study programs plans that emphasized specific problems of literary translation through a close, practical analysis of texts that tackles crucial problems of translation and extensive suggestions for further reading.

One of the most fundamental lessons in a translation program involves reliability. To put that differently, translation students must know the causes of error because future actions and decisions will be based on the translation. Perhaps the first lesson that students learn is that simple word by word translations have tremendous disadvantages. For an explanation of why this is so, one simply needs to use an internet translation product. Sometimes translation workers must use this type of translation strategy when involved in medical translation, Legal Translation or another form of highly technical translation. The following true story attests to the difficult issues encountered by professional translators.

About a decade ago, a junior in a translation program received a Medical Translation internship with a leading research organization that is located in Germany. Because the new translator had some German language skills and proficiency in English, his translation skills were acceptable. However, it’s important to note that while this person was a native speaker of English, his German language skills were somewhat limited. At the hotel, a service desk attendant asked him if the temperature in his room was acceptable. He understood the question, how he would reply in his native language and the translation of those words into German. Because he was nearly breaking out in a sweat, he replied to the question by saying that he was really hot. However, as most Anglophones do not realize, in German, it is necessary to say “it is hot to me,” and not, “I am hot.” The two statements carry very different meanings in German. The person who had asked the questions gave him a bizarre look that made him think he had done something embarrassing. What the American had done was made a sexual remark instead of indicating something about the temperature of the air. The lesson here is that while word-for-word substitution may seem correct it can be disastrously wrong in German.

We all know how important food is to every human being, so it is natural to attract the interest of students involved in translation studies programs. The reason is that people from all nationalities and cultures have an opinion on it. Regardless of the language that a person speaks, everyone involved in translation, from beginning students to highly skilled professionals, have a set of beliefs that pertain to it. That is because food can provoke highly emotional thoughts. An indispensable part of our lives, good food also is a material component of various events such as national holidays, religious celebrations, birthday parties, wedding receptions, and gatherings with friends and neighbors.

All translation students and professionals have opinions about food and just about everything related to it. While Russian Translation Professionals like talking about borscht, German Translation workers boast about the qualities of their sausages and Medical Translation workers just ask us to eat healthy. In addition, all translation workers prefer one particular style of food or other such as fast food, junk food, cafeteria food, ethnic food, restaurant food, and the snacks and popcorn you munch at a movie theater. Moreover, all of us have different preferences about what we like to put on our food like salt, ketchup, red pepper, various kinds of sauces, sauerkraut and so on.

Our activities in our series of articles titled, Eat The Russian Translation, are focused on food. While the subject is confined to food, we offer a wide range of various instructional activities relating to language studies. One article may say something about verbs, another may deal with vocabulary, and the next may be about a writing topic. Sometimes only a word game will be added-something that will make students pay attention to the languages they study.

Many of the activities in our series of writings involve games and creativity. That is because in my opinion playing with language is very important in building language skills. Students need to develop an interest in words and their quirkiness, versatility, and power. English teachers have to do their best to turn kids on to language. Play is a powerful tool to do so.

This series of articles was my idea, however, I am not the only major contributor to it. In fact, I was only a small part of the effort that went into making it this possible. Sarah Von Seggern, a German Translation worker and Michael Antipov, a Russian Translation professional, worked alongside me and assisted in so many ways—writing, proofreading, fact-checking, you name it. Thank you also goes to Jennifer Martinez, a Spanish Translation professional who also assisted in a variety of ways. I will be happy if you like Translation Is Ready and it turns out to be helpful you in your translation teachings.

How are your discussions about food held when in class? Do you discuss a time when you were unsuccessful in preparing a special meal? Do you enjoy remembering how your great-grandmother used to make wonderful homemade ravioli? Did a humorous event take place to a family member while eating out? Do you make jokes about the food made by a relative which all of you hated because of its awful taste?

In the first task, we encourage you to write a story about food. If you need some help thinking of one you may ask your classmates, friends and instructors to make suggestions. If you still find it difficult, share any kind of memory you have relating to food – maybe a special meal, or a special occasion.

Regardless of occupation, the dawn of a new decade often comes with very little change. While the beginning of a decade may not have great importance, it’s an important time for translation and interpretation professionals to evaluate technological and scientific discoveries and project where the new opportunities will be for us. Within the research arena, some areas that professional interpreters and translators should evaluate at this time are the fields of Medical Translation and Scientific Translation. We know that translation workers with a formal education in science or medicine are in short supply and command the best salaries when they seek employment that utilizes their knowledge. That’s why we’ve devoted this article to exploring emerging opportunities in these areas.

The world is full of people who are skeptical about the future and who believe that there are no more great discoveries that are left to be made. But as translation professionals, we have witnessed a growth in the number of projects that have come from discoveries made in the medical, biotechnology, genomic, and space technology fields that have kept us busy for months and provided attractive salaries. Even with a limited scientific and medical background, it is likely that you have taken on projects that have been related to important discoveries in green technology, computer science, medical products and more. When the concept of The Human Genome Project (HGP) was first introduced, the scientific community and public had high hopes that the investment would produce ground-breaking reports that would explain our world, reveal how our bodies function and provide cures to conditions that range from autism to stroke. Another scientific project that required an investment in the billions of dollars was the Large Hadron Collider that will help answer questions about matter, antimatter, black holes, dark energy and extra dimensions.

But science often has a way of not being able to live up to its intentions To illustrate, while scientists have claimed to have cracked the code of the human genome, it will take many decades to uncover the mysteries of life and the end of disease that the project was intended for. While geneticists are discovering some remarkable things relative to the intricacies of the human body, they are no nearer, scientifically speaking, to unlocking the mysteries of life than before they started. Even though the project hasn’t produced any earth shattering results, the substantial investment has given researchers a tremendous amount of information about humans.

If on the other hand, you are one of the hundreds of French and German Translator professionals who play important roles in the translation of research projects related to the LHC, then you know that the project hasn’t lived up to expectations. Since it opened, you have probably seen news stories calling it a monumental instrument that has been nothing but a letdown in the public’s point of view and the target for bad press. The fact remains that while the LHC is years away from operating at the power it needs to discover the Higgs Boson Particle, scientists continue to believe that the collider will provide amazing information.

Of all scientific breakthroughs, the one that created the most work for translation workers was research involving global climate change. Without the availability of experienced translation professionals with scientific backgrounds, the analyses of leading scientists would come to a screeching hault. Most importantly, Language Translators have been able to work in tandem with skilled scientists and have had opportunities to establish themselves while earning substantial salaries and most importantly, job security. Perhaps this is why so many Japanese to English Translation workers have found a great deal of personal reward by being scientific translation workers.

Regardless of the industry that employs you, in this global economy you are bound to encounter people who communicate in different methods. As you are already aware, some international college students can be very difficult to understand, but local US college can seem quite clear with when communicating. On the other hand, some people may have vocal limitations that force them to rely on written forms of communication. In these cases, people may try to communicate using a crude form sign language. In addition to people who have difficulties talking, there will also be people who have difficulties with listening. Are you good at reading body language? The reason for asking is that some people may prefer to use body language and we must be able to recognize to this and respond appropriately.

According to a Korean Translation agency, explaining common communication problems is done by example. Therefore, It sometimes helps people to think of familiar people that have trouble communicating. By doing this, people begin to understand the wide range of ways in which people try to get their ideas across on a daily basis. After suffering from a debilitating illness, disease, accident or some other injury, a new form of communication may be adopted by some people. We need to stress that the purpose for doing this exercise is to provide examples that add to the complexity of interpretation. Here is a set of questions to help you when you find yourself in a similar situation.
_ How does the individual communicates with others?
_ Does the person communicate in writing, by drawing or in other certain ways with others?
_ Is it acceptable to communicate in a particular way that you have observed?
_ Could your team communicate through pictures and images?

Can you understand the importance of asking these questions? In the arena of German Legal Translation, the answer is clear. Steer clear from this and at all times and because it will certainly mean the further decay of communication.

Even in the world of Portuguese Medical Translation, one must place great importance on the art of conversation and interactions that take place between relatives, co-workers, insurance companies and other external services companies. That’s because when messages are incorrectly decoded, the data that is collected will be inaccurate and could result in large, costly errors. Everyone has a right to make their own choices in life and this includes the people you support.

Let’s imagine that you are tasked with providing service to a German speaking visitor. Even in these times, it might be difficult to have someone standing by that can communicate with this person immediately.. A logical place to begin is by defining a strategy that answers the question about how the patient will communicate with you and how you will communicate with her. While it seems somewhat trivial, it is still important to learn what your patient would like to be called. Never under estimate the importance of calling a person by their name and more important, doing it accurately. This informs the person you are speaking to him, gets his attention, and shows respect. Until you know the patient well, it is usually not advisable to use his or her first name. In fact, some cultures may consider this rude.
